Speaker Sam Greco at the Grand Opening of Hoya Court
Welcome to the GUSA Senate, the legislative branch of student Government at Georgetown University. My name is Sam Greco and I am the Speaker of the Eighth GUSA Senate, as well as a Senator representing Nevils and Alumni Square. The Senate is a dynamic and engaged group made up of twenty-eight student senators actively working to improve the life of their fellow students on the Hilltop.
The Senate’s strength is in having twenty-eight student leaders deeply involved in campus life representing students across all years, schools, majors, and living situations at Georgetown. From freshman senators who voice the various issues and concerns facing newer Hoyas to our Hilltop to senators from the senior class who are seasoned in identifying and dealing with student issues, the GUSA Senate is uniquely able to represent the voices and interests of students at Georgetown University.
During the Senate’s weekly meetings, we pass resolutions voicing the will of the Georgetown students who have elected us. Issues range from academics to social life to the allocation of nearly one million dollars each year to student programming. Each senator in turn is a member of one of the Senate’s three standing committees, Student Life, Intellectual Life, and Finance and Appropriations. These committees also have subcommittees under them focusing in on more specific issues under their purviews. Additionally, the Senate’s work is supported by a small support staff that is instrumental in helping senators achieve their goals and providing invaluable assistance to the operation of the Senate.
Heading the Senate as its Speaker is a great honor; it is filled with a passionate and committed group of student leaders who share the critical values of public service, dedication, and hard work.
