Today, Dr. Olson sent an email to the university community outlining the changes to the Code of Conduct regarding student cars and the ban on student parking in the surrounding neighborhoods.
This is a failure by the university to advocate for student interests, particularly because of the manner in which this policy change was carried out. Instead of going through the Disciplinary Review Committee (DRC) — a body comprising students, faculty and administrators that represent the interests of multiple parties and is charged with making changes to the Code of Conduct — Dr. Olson made the decision unilaterally. Making changes through the DRC ensures that changes to the Code of Conduct represent the interests of the entire university community. Bypassing the DRC in their decision directly contradicts the spirit of cooperation that should exist between students and the administration and subverts a well-established body that has historically been consulted prior to changes to the Student Code of Conduct.”
The university took a step in the wrong direction with this policy change. We are extremely disappointed with this action, and we implore the administration to include students in these types of decisions.
