Speaker Spyropoulos with Senate Secretary Rebecca Wong and Parliamentarian Erin Dickenson
Welcome to the legislative branch of student government at Georgetown University! My name is George Spyropoulos and I’m the Speaker of the GUSA Senate, as well as an At-Large Senator representing the entire student body. The Senate is a wonderful way to get involved in student life at Georgetown. With 27 student senators, the Senate is a vibrant think tank committed to enhancing the experience of living and learning on the Hilltop.
Our key strength lies in having people represent their fellow students from all four years and all living situations. We are lucky to have a number of freshman senators who voice the various issues and concerns that face Hoyas during their first year on the Hilltop, and offer a more fresh perspective. Our sophomore and junior senators provide the unique perspective of college students who are in the process of growing socially, personally, and intellectually as they are taking a more active leadership role in the Senate. Finally, senators from Georgetown’s senior class are seasoned in identifying and dealing with student issues.
During our weekly meetings, we pass resolutions voicing the will of the Georgetown students who have elected us. Issues we have been dealing with include lobbying for online distribution of all graded material, expanding the GUTS bus schedule, and pushing for more education on the pressing issue of sexual assault. Further, our Finance & Appropriations Committee deals with budget issues, including the allocation of an approximate $1,000,000 to student activities on campus. The Intellectual Life Committee handles academic and other intellectual issues, such as internet usage and the arts. Our Student Life Committee is concerned with all other matters pertaining to student life at Georgetown, from food services to sustainability. The Senate’s work is supported by a handful of staff members and a network of specialized subcommittees.
Heading the Senate as its Speaker has been a joy; it is staffed by a diverse and lively group of student leaders who share the values of public service, commitment, hard work, and companionship. All undergraduates are eligible to run for a seat, and I would like to encourage everyone to consider doing so in the Fall election cycle!
